Spark New Life into Your Store with this Checklist

One thing I can always tell when I enter a store is if the business conducts regular floorwalk checklists. What is a floorwalk you may ask? A floorwalk is just what it sounds like, walking the floor of your store (with a notepad in hand!) Starting at the front of your store and critiquing, assessing and listing actions for any areas of success, improvement and future plans.

From my early days at Freedom, we would start the week with a floorwalk. To assess sales from the week before, discuss stock filling, list standards and housekeeping and ofcourse planning for what to do next to inspire every customer that entered the store.

I have tailored this over the years and this checklist covers the store exterior, window displays, store displays, counter area etc as well as leaving space for those big picture ideas that always come up when you’re brainstorming with your team.

You can do this yourself but I recommend including your team to get more points of view as well as buy in for actions.

Here are the main areas to include:

STORE EXTERIOR

Is the signage correct? Are the windows clean? Is there any rubbish to clean away?

WINDOW DISPLAY

Assess it’s success, has it gotten a strong response from customers, have products sold well from it? Does it need a change or refresh? Is there a plan for the next window?

FLOORPLAN

Assess the traffic flow through the store. Think of ideas for dead zones. Are the walkways clear?

IN-STORE DISPLAYS

Assess the success of hotspots. Do you need to re-stock? Is there a plan for the next key displays?

COUNTER AREA

Re-stock impulse items. Check cleaning and clutter. Are the displays behind the counter updated?

ATMOSPHERICS

Do you have a music playlist for your demographic? What is the smell and feel of your store, does it suit your brand?

LIGHTING

Check for any blown globes. Are the main displays well lit as well as the exterior and rear store lighting. This is good to check at day and night.

SIGNAGE & TICKETING

Is promotional signage and ticketing current and in good condition?

WAREHOUSE ENTRANCE

Check housekeeping standards. Is signage clear, unobstructed and is the area clear of rubbish?

FACILITIES

Are the toilets clean? Are back of house areas clean and well maintained?

FITTING ROOMS

Check housekeeping standards. Is the signage current, products returned etc?

STAFF UNIFORMS

Are they maintained and clean?

BIG PICTURE IDEAS

What are the big ideas or actions to follow up. Are there any other areas which need to be addressed?

Remember, a Floorwalk is not just about identifying problems – it's also an opportunity to celebrate successes and brainstorm creative solutions. By involving your team in the process, you can gather valuable insights and foster buy-in for any necessary actions.

We have done the hard work for you and created a checklist ready to use. Download our free Floorwalk Checklist here to guide your next assessment and start refreshing your store and get brainstorming!

Until next time!
