Sustainable by Design: How We Turn Storytelling into Impactful Displays

In celebration of Plastic Free July, we were invited by the team at City of Perth to create an engaging cabinet display at the City of Perth Library. The brief was to inspire and educate the community on simple, sustainable swaps, to show how small changes can lead to a big impact - and make it visually compelling.

We took this ethos to heart, not just in the messaging but in the materials and process too. From concept to completion, this project was driven by creative sustainability. Instead of using conventional materials, we chose Re-board - a strong, lightweight, and fully recyclable material - as the backbone of the design. We also repurposed as many props as we could from our workshop supply. We also factored in how the library would store the props and flat packed board pieces with the plan for them to be able to reuse and reassemble the concept easily.

To bring the concept to life, we collaborated with James Carrero from Factica Forms. Once our creative direction and concept were locked in, James applied his industrial design expertise to engineer a reusable system that clicks together effortlessly and minimises waste. Incredibly, the entire structure was created using just three sheets of 16mm Re-board. Thoughtful, efficient, and aligned with circular design principles.

A few ways you can take part in Plastic Free July and that we used for the display were:

  1. Choose items that can be reused over single-use alternatives

  2. Shop in bulk food stores and choose loose teas and coffees

  3. Swap out plastic toys for wooden versions

  4. Make your own personal care and cleaning products

  5. Choose sustainable home and hygiene swaps

Bringing this display to life was such a rewarding process and we loved collaborating with others who share our passion for creative, impactful, and eco-conscious design.

Until Next Time,

Juliet
